Valentines wines: Top 50 sparkling roses
Better late than never. That’s the motto of a serially Just-In-Time romantic like us. The biggest day of the year for florists, chocolatiers and restaurateurs is almost upon us so we thought we’d better post a list of the Top 50 wines for lovers before it’s too late. That drink, of course, is sparkling rose. Or Champagne if your other half is more impressed with budget than bouquet.
Sparkling rose is a tiny class in terms of volume. But not price. Pink fizz commands a hefty premium to its paler stablemates for reasons not entirely clear to us other than getting the pretty colour.
This year’s list is led by Australian labels but also includes some Kiwi bubbles and some Champagnes. The more interesting of the imports to us is Bollinger’s little brother, Ayala, which outranked its superior stablemate by several places on our list. We cut the list a few different ways but we’re pretty confident that you won’t go wrong turning up tomorrow night with one of these:
